Canvas Prints

A canvas print provides something really special for your photos.

In our opinion, a stretched canvas print is the best you can do with a photo.  Glossy photo paper is simply a hangover from a more primitive age when photos had to be printed using chemicals.

A canvas print requires no glass.  This removes the need to put the print under glass and means that you can see the image without annoyingly distracting reflections.

Canvas can also be stretched in the same way as an oil painting.  Stretching is far more economical than framing a photo the same size and adds impact, as the wall becomes the frame.

The texture provides a painterly look that enhances any image and allows bigger enlargements than would be acceptable on glossy paper.

The Giclée Studio strongly recommends that a Stretching Border be added to the image.

A stretching border, sometimes called a “gallery wrap”, is where 9 copies of the image are made, flipped horizontally and/or vertically and positioned around the edge of the image.  This allows the print to flow around the stretching frame, without affecting the face of the image.  It is well worth the small additional expense, which includes the additional canvas required.  As with everything, if you have any questions, just give us a ring or drop us an email.

The Giclée Studio uses only 100% cotton artist’s canvas with a special coating that accepts the ink.   The coating contains no optical brighteners as these can yellow over time.  The ink is pigment based, which is more stable than a dye based ink and is UV resistant.  Accelerated aging tests (www.wilhelm_research.com) show that there is no appreciable fading or colour shifting for over 80 years.  Black and white lasts for more than 200 years.  Of course, this presumes that the prints are not displayed in direct sunlight and does not take atmospheric contaminants into account, as these vary greatly by location.
